Run HP Diagnose & Fix before rebuilding the printer queue

HP’s current support flow directs owners to Diagnose & Fix in the HP app for supported printers when printing fails or the device appears offline. The tool can detect queue, connection and driver problems; that is a better first test than assuming the printer has lost power or reinstalling every HP component. Its exact availability depends on the printer and operating system, so use it only if the HP app lists the device and presents the tool.

The steps below apply to a powered printer that can be added to the HP app. They address printing and queue failures. If the panel is dark or the printer reports a paper, cartridge or hardware error, resolve that printer-side condition first using the exact product guide.

Check the printer before the computer

Read the printer display or status lights and verify the paper, toner/ink and access doors are in a ready state. Confirm the printer is on the same Wi-Fi network as the computer, or connected by USB. HP’s tool requires the printer to be added to the app and powered on. A disconnected device may not appear for diagnosis.

HP’s support flow first checks printer and network connection, then runs Diagnose & Fix and re-adds the printer if needed. The app should be installed and the printer selected; if the device is absent, troubleshoot Wi-Fi/USB discovery before trying queue repairs. The diagnostic can only act on issues visible to its supported app environment.

Run the app diagnostic

Open the HP app, select the printer, choose Diagnose & Fix and select Start. Leave the app open until its analysis finishes, then follow the displayed repair instructions. HP says the tool may address stuck or paused jobs, offline status, network connection, spooler issues, and on Windows some port or driver configuration problems. Its actions depend on the problem it detects.

HP lists spooler problems and incorrect printer-port configuration among possible fixes. The latter applies to Windows. If the diagnostic reports a port issue, apply its prompt and then test the printer; do not manually change ports based on a guide for a different product or driver.

Clear a Windows queue only if jobs remain

HP’s cannot-print guide says a job may simply be waiting in the print queue. Check that offline mode is not selected, cancel stuck jobs, wait for the queue to clear, then run the app diagnosis again. Do not delete every printer entry before confirming which queue is active; duplicate or stale queues can make the wrong device appear selected.

For Windows queues, first confirm that Use Printer Offline is not selected, cancel pending jobs and wait for the list to clear. HP describes a stuck job as a possible cause when sending a job produces no action. If jobs reappear, capture the queue state before clearing it again.

Re-add only after confirming connection

If the printer is connected but still missing from the app, HP’s offline instructions say to remove and re-add it after confirming the same network or USB connection. Restart the printer and computer if the app does not detect it. If printing still fails, preserve the diagnostic result, app/OS version and exact printer message for HP support instead of repeating resets that erase evidence.

HP’s page describes a 60-second unplug reset: turn the printer off, unplug its power source, wait one minute, reconnect directly to a wall outlet and restart. Use this only when an HP support flow calls for reset and when the product’s power instructions permit it. A reset does not clear paper or cartridge faults.

B0YZ1A: model-specific checks

Use this model’s marking technology

HP B0YZ1A is recorded as Electro-photographic (EP). Separate a device-generated test from a computer job, and match the consumable system before following a replacement or print-quality procedure.

Check the recorded two-sided capability

HP B0YZ1A lists automatic duplex output as Yes. Compare the driver’s two-sided option, paper size and media type with the supported paper path. A printer’s output duplex entry does not establish two-sided scanning.

Not Printing

Check the queue and one short job

Open the operating system’s print queue and inspect whether the job is paused, held, waiting for paper, or blocked behind another job. Cancel one test job through normal controls, then send a one-page plain-text document. A large PDF or photo can take time to render and can make the queue seem frozen. Check the printer panel for a paper-size, cover, or supply prompt.

If the printer is shared, do not clear all users’ jobs. Record the job state and error before changing settings.

Print from the control panel

Use the model’s control-panel option to print a configuration, status, or quality page. This bypasses the computer, application, and queue. If the page prints correctly, the print engine worked under that condition; investigate the selected queue, driver, host, or connection. If it fails, follow the model’s paper, supply, or error instructions.

A multifunction printer’s panel copy is another useful check. If copy and internal page work but a computer job does not, do not begin printhead cleaning or replace toner.

Verify device, tray, and driver settings

Confirm the application selected the correct physical printer rather than an old queue or virtual PDF device. Check paper size, tray, media type, duplex, color, page range, and copies. A printer can wait for the size selected in the driver even when another size is loaded. Try a second application with one plain page to separate document rendering from printer communication.

Download software from the exact-model support page. A generic driver may omit duplex, tray selection, color, or status functions. Remove only confirmed obsolete duplicate queues.

Follow the paper or quality branch

If paper begins feeding but output is blank, faded, or streaked, keep the page and use the quality guide. For an inkjet, follow the model’s nozzle-check order; for a laser printer, use its own quality page and supply instructions. If paper jams, use the owner manual’s access doors and pull direction. Never force rollers or reach into a hot fuser.

If the panel reports a code, record it exactly instead of repeatedly resending the job.

Report a reproducible failure

Share the model, OS, driver version, app, connection, queue name, panel error, and internal-page result. State whether a job stays queued, disappears, or prints partially. Include a small non-sensitive sample only if the manufacturer requests it. For managed printers, ask IT before changing queue or network settings.

Save Wi-Fi and scan destinations before a network reset. A print-only symptom does not justify erasing the whole printer setup.

Test one job without specialized settings

Use a short text file on plain paper with one-sided, black printing. This removes photo settings, duplex, tray switching, and large-file rendering from the first test. If it works, restore the original document’s options one by one. If it fails, the internal page and queue state determine whether to check printer-side handling or the computer. Keep the successful test page as a baseline.
