Repair or replace?

5 minute read · Shared guidance for refrigerators

Describe the decision in household terms

Start by writing down what the refrigerator must do for your household: usable storage, freezer space, water or ice features, delivery access, and acceptable downtime. Record the current unit’s model, approximate purchase date if known, visible condition, and recent repair history. Age is context, not a rule that decides the outcome by itself. A well-kept older unit with a limited repair may compare favorably with a replacement that requires difficult delivery or installation. A newer unit with a major repair and repeated failures may be a poor fit to keep. Note whether the appliance is under warranty and whether service has confirmed the failure. This description keeps the comparison tied to your actual choice rather than broad advice about what owners should do.

List household capacity and feature needs.
Record known age, repair history, condition, and warranty status.
Describe the current failure and whether a technician has confirmed its scope.

Build the repair side of the worksheet

Use a written service estimate that separates diagnostic charges, parts, labor, follow-up visits, and warranty. Record what the repair is expected to restore and what it does not address. If the quote is preliminary, mark it as uncertain and identify the possible added work. Include the time until service and whether the household has a workable way to store food in the meantime. FDA guidance says a refrigerator should be kept at 40°F or below; a long delay may create practical food safety costs that belong in the decision. Do not treat food loss as a reason to rush into an unclear repair. Instead, establish a safe temporary plan and then compare a properly scoped repair with replacement.

Enter the complete repair estimate and its exclusions.
Mark confirmed diagnosis separately from possible additional work.
Record expected downtime and safe food storage arrangements.

Build the replacement side fairly

Find a replacement option that meets the household’s storage and feature needs, then confirm it can pass through the delivery route and fit the available location according to its installation requirements. Compare the full purchase and setup cost, including delivery, installation, connection work if applicable, and haul-away. For energy use, compare annual energy consumption and capacity from reliable product information rather than relying on a general claim that a newer refrigerator always saves enough to justify replacement. The Department of Energy FEMP comparison provides a way to consider annual energy use and capacity when evaluating residential refrigerators. Include the ownership horizon you expect and be cautious about treating projected savings as guaranteed; household use and electricity rates affect the result.

Select a replacement that satisfies capacity, features, and delivery access.
Add delivery, installation, connection, and removal charges to its price.
Compare annual energy use alongside capacity using the DOE FEMP resource.

Compare totals and uncertainties

Make two columns: repair and replace. Under repair, include the quoted work, likely additional visit, and any practical downtime cost. Under replace, include the appliance, delivery, installation, and removal. Then list nonfinancial differences such as reliability confidence, fit, storage layout, and the value of features. For example, suppose a repair quote is $480 and a suitable replacement costs $1,250 including delivery and removal; the simple gap is $770 before energy use, future repairs, or installation differences. That arithmetic does not decide the case. If the repair scope is confirmed and the current unit otherwise suits the household, the lower cost may be persuasive. If the quote is uncertain, history includes repeat failures, or replacement meets a strong need, the apparent gap may understate the value of replacing.

Calculate the initial gap between complete repair and replacement totals.
List unknown charges and assumptions separately from confirmed costs.
Compare the practical value of reliability, fit, features, and storage.

Choose a threshold you can explain

Set a household threshold based on the facts you gathered, not an age slogan. You might decide to repair if the diagnosis is clear, the repair is covered by a meaningful written warranty, and the total is well below a replacement that fits. You might replace if the repair is broad or uncertain, several recent failures have accumulated, or the current layout no longer serves the household. Keep energy use in proportion: annual consumption differences matter over the years you expect to own the unit, but they do not erase a large upfront cost automatically. Before committing, confirm the repair schedule or replacement delivery date and make a food storage plan. Write one sentence explaining why the choice fits your budget, needs, and confidence in the outcome.

Set a maximum acceptable repair total and note why you chose it.
Check the repair guarantee and replacement delivery timing.
Write down the selected option and the facts that support it.

What to do with what you find

A technician has confirmed a limited repair, the written quote is complete, and the refrigerator otherwise meets household needs.

Repair has a defined cost and preserves a unit that still fits the household.

Compare the quote with the replacement total and verify the repair warranty before authorizing.

The estimate is preliminary, excludes possible major work, or follows repeated failures.

The repair total and likely reliability are uncertain, so a simple price comparison is incomplete.

Get the diagnosis and contingencies in writing, then compare a replacement that fits the home.

A replacement has substantially lower annual energy use but carries a large upfront and installation cost.

Energy savings may matter over the ownership period, but they do not by themselves establish payback.

Compare annual energy and capacity data, estimate ownership horizon, and weigh the upfront total against household needs.

Common questions

Is there a refrigerator age when replacement is always better?

No. Consider condition, failure scope, repair quote, warranty, energy use, fit, and household needs together.

How do I account for food during downtime?

Plan safe cold storage using FDA guidance, including its recommendation to keep a refrigerator at 40°F or below.
