Describe what happens and when

Tell the service provider what the dryer does, when the symptom began, and whether it happens on every cycle or only with particular loads. Useful examples include no start, interrupted operation, unusually long drying, no heat, unusual noise, or a displayed message. Note the cycle and options selected, approximate load type, and whether the display changes. If a code appears, photograph it and provide the exact model number; do not infer a diagnosis from the code without the model's documentation.

Mention recent changes that could affect the system: a moved appliance, new vent route, electrical work, gas work, or replacement of a washer. These facts help the technician separate a product issue from a site condition. Avoid repeated resets or cycles when the dryer smells hot, produces smoke, or behaves abnormally.

Photograph the rating label and any displayed message.
Write down the symptom, cycle, load, and any recent installation changes.

Check owner-accessible conditions first

For a vented dryer, inspect and clean the lint screen as directed for the exact machine. Look at the accessible exterior vent outlet while the dryer is operating only if it can be observed safely from the ground; weak airflow can point to a blocked or restricted duct, but does not identify the precise cause. CPSC guidance emphasizes lint removal and maintaining the exhaust path. Do not reach into the duct or dismantle the dryer to investigate.

Condenser and heat-pump designs need different attention. Follow the model's instructions for the lint filters, heat exchanger or condenser care, and condensate tank or drain. A full tank, obstructed filter, or maintenance indicator can affect operation, but the exact service routine varies. A ventless model has no outdoor dryer exhaust to assess, so do not apply vented-dryer checks to it.

Recognize symptoms that need prompt attention

Stop using the dryer if there is smoke, a burning smell that persists, visible scorching, or repeated overheating. If gas is smelled, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency service according to local guidance; do not operate switches or attempt a repair. For an electrical burning odor or visible damage, stop use and arrange appropriate service. CPSC identifies overheated dryers as a fire hazard and recommends keeping lint and exhaust pathways clear.

A dryer that repeatedly trips a breaker, produces an unusual scraping or thumping sound, or fails to heat after basic owner checks also merits diagnosis rather than repeated cycling. Do not remove panels or probe wiring. Gas burner, heater, motor, and control work involve components that need trained service and model-specific procedures.

Choose the right service route

Check whether the appliance is still within a written warranty period and identify the seller or manufacturer contact named in the warranty. Have proof of purchase, model and serial information, and a short symptom history ready. Ask whether the provider is authorized for the brand and whether the visit fee is credited toward repair; request the diagnostic charge and any travel fee before booking. Warranty coverage depends on the written terms and circumstances, so do not assume a symptom is covered.

If the dryer was recently installed, contact the installer when the symptom could involve the connection, vent, leveling, or setup. For a persistent product fault, use the manufacturer's support channel or a qualified appliance service provider. Ask what diagnostic work is included, whether parts and labor are quoted separately, and whether approval is required before additional work.

Review the diagnosis and estimate

Request a written description of the fault, proposed work, parts, labor, trip or diagnostic charges, and any warranty or return of replaced parts. Ask what evidence supports the diagnosis and whether a vent restriction or home connection issue must be corrected separately. Compare the estimated repair total with the price of a suitable replacement using your own current quotes, including installation and removal costs; there is no universal repair threshold that fits every household.

Before authorizing work, confirm what happens if the proposed repair does not resolve the symptom and whether additional findings require a new approval. Keep the service record and invoice with the purchase documents. If the cause remains uncertain, a second diagnostic opinion may help, especially where the first estimate proposes major component replacement without explaining the observed failure.

What to do with what you find

Smoke, persistent burning odor, visible scorching, or suspected gas leak is present.

Continued operation could create immediate danger.

Stop use and seek the appropriate emergency, utility, or service response.

A vented dryer takes much longer and accessible airflow seems weak.

The exhaust path may be restricted, but an appliance fault is also possible.

Arrange duct inspection or service; do not dismantle the dryer or assume the sensor is at fault.

Have these details ready

Exact model and serial identifiers, purchase date, and written warranty.
Symptom history with cycle, load, message, and installation changes.
Written diagnostic estimate showing charges, parts, labor, and approval terms.

Common questions

Should I keep running cycles to see whether a fault clears?

Not when there is smoke, burning odor, overheating, gas odor, or repeated electrical interruption. Stop use and get the situation assessed.

What should I have ready when booking?

The full model number, purchase information, symptom timeline, cycle details, displayed messages, and any recent installation changes.
