Canon PIXMA TR4720 / TR4722 series
TR4720 scanning, faxing, and network faults: isolate the function that failed
The TR4700 series is an all-in-one family, so a device that “does not work” may still print while scanning, faxing or wireless discovery fails. Canon’s TR4700 support contents separate those functions and provide distinct network, fax, scan and operation-problem branches. Before resetting the printer or reinstalling everything, identify whether the issue is local panel operation, a computer scan utility, a fax line, or network printing. The name K10546 maps to TR4720/TR4722; Canon’s family manual directly includes those names.
Preserve the exact message and the result of one test that isolates the path. A printed nozzle pattern confirms that the printer mechanism and local controls can produce a page, but it does not prove the computer network or scanner driver works. A successful USB scan does not prove Wi-Fi setup. A fax transmission error does not identify a paper or printhead fault. Choose the matching Canon support section based on the failed function, and record any change immediately before the problem, such as router replacement, operating-system update, or telephone-line change.
Test local printing independently
Start with a simple copy or a printer-generated maintenance sheet. If those work, the paper path and print engine can perform a local job; focus the next check on the computer queue, driver or connection. If the printer panel itself displays a code or cannot complete its own pattern, use the TR4700 support-code entry first. Avoid reinstalling the scan software before you know whether the scanner function or print function failed.
For scanning, distinguish device, driver, and application
Canon’s TR4700 manual has Windows and macOS scan workflows, including IJ Scan Utility and ScanGear. Confirm which application failed, whether the scanner is selected by its correct device name, and whether a preview starts. If the printer is found but the computer cannot scan, check the matching operating-system driver and permissions before resetting wireless settings. If the scanner is silent or reports a device code at the panel, capture that code and use the model manual rather than repeating application installs.
For fax, capture whether sending or receiving failed
The TR4700 manual lists separate guidance for cannot send a fax, cannot receive a fax, inability to dial, and a fax saved in memory. Record whether the problem is inbound or outbound, whether the document feeds, whether the telephone line has dial tone, and the screen’s exact message. Do not treat “fax received, saved in memory” as a print-engine failure; Canon’s manual describes it as a fax/print state that needs its own handling. Confirm line configuration in the model guide before changing settings.
For Wi-Fi, check the printer’s network state first
Canon’s network troubleshooting includes inability to find the printer during setup, loss of discovery over Wi-Fi, and use after replacing a wireless router. Check whether the TR4720 is joined to the intended network and whether the computer uses the same reachable network. A guest network or changed password can prevent discovery while local panel copy still works. Resetting LAN settings can erase the current connection; reserve it for the manual’s prescribed recovery path and note the old network details first.
Use support codes as identifiers, not as generic symptoms
The TR4700 online manual contains a support-code list and directs owners to code-specific procedures. Copy the full number/letter combination and note where it appeared—printer LCD, computer driver, or scan utility. A paper-feed code and a network setup message require different responses. Follow only the entry in the TR4700 guide; do not apply a TR8600 touchscreen control sequence or a code meaning found for another PIXMA family.
Escalate with the function matrix
If the issue persists, give Canon support a short matrix: local copy works or fails, nozzle test works or fails, computer print works or fails, scan preview works or fails, fax send/receive status, connection type, operating system, and full support code. That helps the technician isolate the subsystem without assuming the all-in-one has a single shared failure. Avoid opening the casing or probing telephone/network electronics; the manual’s support and service route should handle conditions beyond owner setup.
For a support case, also note whether the printer panel can make a copy without a computer and whether the scanner can create a local preview. These simple comparisons isolate computer discovery from the printer’s basic functions. Do not clear a fax memory or reset the LAN until the relevant manual entry has been read, since those actions may remove stored jobs or connection settings.
